A Woman of Conscience, a Saint for our Time

Send a Petition

The Catholic Worker often used petitions to raise consciousness about a cause.
The Guild accordingly has developed the following petition about Dorothy Day’s
cause for sainthood. Petitions will become part of the documentation forwarded
to the Vatican offices that oversee the canonization process.

Please click on the petition logo below.  Print out the form, fill out the information requested, and mail to: The Dorothy Day Guild, 1011 First Avenue, Room 787, New York, NY 10022. Thank you!

As an exemplar of authentic Christian discipleship for our day, Dorothy Day has no peer.

Her admonition in response to a letter I wrote to her in the 50s “Start where you are” has haunted my conscience since.

Dorothy Day continues to inspire me and others at Manna House in Memphis in the practice of Christian hospitality and the pursuit of justice. But she also inspires by her devotion to prayer and the Eucharist. Her life of holiness deeply reflects the life of Christ.

On this Feast of St. Joseph the Worker and anniversary of the start of The Catholic Worker Movement – may the witness of Dorothy Day’s life stir us to live the Gospel ever more faithfully.

This candle burns in our darkness. How can even the old Permskaya Gulag or contemporary Gitmo prevail against such light? Dorothy, pray for us. All you holy men and women, pray for us. Saint Joseph the Worker, pray for us. Angelo Roncalli, in later life Pope John of happy memory, pray for us. Pope Francis and your revered namesake, pray for us. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

I’ve only known of Dorothy for about ten years, and have now read much of her writings and much that has been written about her.

When our son died two years ago tomorrow it was a memoriam of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn that Dorothy wrote, “Red Roses for Her,” that brought me comfort in the depths of grief. Near the end of the piece Dorothy wrote about our prayers have no time limits, God’s love does not either. The last sentence in which I substituted my son’s name Dorothy wrote, “And Josh will be judged by the love that is in his heart.”

I’d read this some months before, and it came back to my memory only hours after our son died.

I asked our pastor to use the previous two paragraphs for Josh’s memorial service, and they were!

Thank you, Dorothy Day, for showing me the love of God.

Dear Friends, Please pray for my pastor Fr. John Madden, from St Johns Church 44 Temple St Worcester MA 01604, who has been diagnosed with an aneurism in his stomach, lumbar problems and rheumatoid arthritis which is prohibiting him from his ministry. He opened his rectory to recovering alcoholics, has a very active soup kitchen, St Francis Xavier Center and on cold days & nights has a shelter in the church basement for the homeless. He is the most joyful priest but needs a miracle to function properly. Thank you and God Bless, Denise

When I was in grammar school, my Aunt Rita took our family to a Catholic Worker Farm in NY where we joined in a prayer circle with Dorothy Day. She’s real to me as I have read her autobiography and her newspaper and seen her with my own eyes.

Now, I ask for her intercession to heal my nephew in Philadelphia, PA, Steven James R. who has physical ailments, emotional ailments, and is off from work on disability for the second time in under a year. Steven has same sex attraction and suicidal inclinations. I ask for angelic protection and healing as his bipolar illness is generational in nature.

It’s complicated but I entrust Steven to his Catholic Church which he has abandoned at this time.
